The M.D. Anderson Cord Blood Bank in collaboration with the Department of Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cell Therapy Laboratory has just been established as a public bank to collect umbilical cord blood units from consenting mothers after the birth of their infant. This blood will be cryopreserved, inventoried and made available to transplant facilities around the world as an alternate option to bone marrow transplantation for patients lacking appropriate marrow donors. The Cord Blood Bank will be collecting units in cooperation with local Texas Medical Center hospitals.
